It’s a great time to be talking about this because, man, the "terrifying" part of that intro? It’s real. We are definitely in the "break things" phase of AI adoption right now. Host: Oh, that is a classic "it worked on my machine" moment with much higher stakes. So, if we want to move this into a production, enterprise-grade environment, we can’t just rely on "trusting" the local dev. The post I saw mentioned moving toward treating MCP servers as "OAuth Resource Servers." Can you break that down for us? Like, how does that actually look in practice? Guest: Yeah, this is the "aha!" moment for a lot of security teams. We need to stop treating MCP servers as ephemeral scripts and start treating them like any other protected API in the building. Host: That makes so much sense. It’s basically bringing the AI into the existing security perimeter instead of building a new, flimsy one around it. But even with a token, the AI is... well, it’s non-deterministic. It’s a "black box" in some ways. How do we stop an authenticated agent from doing something stupid? Like, it has permission to "write," but it shouldn't be "writing" a DELETE command on the whole user table. Guest: Right! And that’s the hardest part. Authentication just proves *who* you are; it doesn’t prove *what* you’re about to do is sane. This is where "Real-Time Policy Controls" come in. Host: (Laughs) I love the idea of an AI having a "babysitter" for its high-risk impulses. "Are you sure you want to do that, Dave?" Guest: That’s the third pillar: Data Masking and Redaction. It’s a huge concern for compliance—think GDPR or HIPAA. You don’t want Social Security numbers or credit card info flying across the public web to a model provider. Host: It’s like the black box on an airplane. You hope you never need it, but when things go wrong, it's the only thing that matters. Guest: Great question. I’d say: Stop using local static keys immediately. Even for a POC. Use a proxy or a governance layer that gives you visibility. If you can't *see* what the AI is sending to your tools, you can't secure it. Start with visibility, then move to identity.
