I haven't slept much since June, but my App Intents have never looked better! Host: I bet! So, Marcus, let’s jump right in. When you saw the Apple Intelligence announcement, what was that "aha" moment for you from a technical perspective? Guest: It actually hit me when they started talking about "orchestration." For a long time, we’ve had Siri Shortcuts and basic App Intents, but they felt like... a side quest, right? Something you did for power users. But with iOS 18, it’s clear that Apple Intelligence is the new fabric of the OS. The "aha" moment was realizing that my app’s primary value might not be the buttons I spent weeks styling, but the *metadata* I expose to the system. We’re moving from "Look at my UI" to "Here is what my app knows how to do." Host: Right, it’s like we’re building a brain for the OS to use rather than just a tool for the user to touch. But that sounds like a huge shift in how we spend our engineering hours. Are we actually spending less time on SwiftUI and more time on... what, schema definitions? Guest: Honestly? Yes. Exactly. If you’re a developer and you haven’t looked at the App Intents framework yet, you’re already behind. In the iOS 18 world, if the system can’t "see" your data semantically through `AppEntity` and `AssistantIntent`, your app is basically invisible to Siri’s new reasoning capabilities. Host: Interesting! So, it’s less imperative programming. But let’s talk about the GenAI stuff. Apple introduced these high-level APIs like the Image Playground and Writing Tools. Is it really as "plug-and-play" as they made it look on stage? Guest: Well, yes and no. If you’re using standard `UITextView` or `NSTextView`, you basically get the Writing Tools for free. You get the summarization, the tone shifts—it’s magic. But, and this is a big "but," if you have a custom text engine—which a lot of us do for specialized apps—you have to implement `UITextWritingToolsCoordinator`. And that... um, that is not a five-minute job. Host: Oh, definitely. I can see a lot of legacy systems struggling with images just... appearing in the middle of a string. But what about the privacy side? Apple is leaning hard into "Private Cloud Compute." As a developer, does that actually make our lives easier, or is it just more hoops to jump through? Guest: Actually, I think it’s a huge relief. Think about the liability. If you wanted to build an AI feature last year, you’d have to pipe user data to an LLM provider, manage the API keys, worry about data retention, and write a thirty-page privacy policy. Host: That’s a great point. It lowers the barrier to entry for smaller teams who don't have a massive security budget. Now, Marcus, I have to ask about the "struggle" part. What’s been the biggest headache for you while migrating to the iOS 18 SDK? Guest: Swift 6 and Concurrency. Hands down. Because all these AI tasks—inference, Image Playground calls, semantic indexing—they’re resource-heavy. If you haven't adopted Swift 6’s strict concurrency model, your app is going to feel janky, or worse, the OS will just kill it for hogging the main thread. Host: Wow. So "SEO for Siri" is basically going to be a new job title? Guest: Literally! We’re going to be optimizing our `DisplayRepresentation` and `ParameterSummary` like we used to optimize keywords. If your intent is called "Do Action," Siri will ignore it. If it’s "Log a 10-minute meditation session in the wellness log," now you’re talking. Host: "SEO for Siri." I love it.
